After leaving school, Dyckerhoff took an active part in the First World War. From 1919, he studied economics and business administration at the universities of Cologne and Munich, graduated from the Munich School of Commerce in 1921 and was awarded a doctorate in economics from the University of Würzburg in 1922.

After working in Hamburg and Rotterdam, he moved to Dyckerhoff & Widmann in Santiago de Chile in 1925 and then worked for Eduardo Soli Reynaud (cement industry) in Buenos Aires. In 1927 he joined Dyckerhoff & Söhne GmbH and became an authorized signatory in 1929. In 1936 he became a deputy member of the Board of Management of Dyckerhoff Portland Zementwerke AG and in 1938 a full member. As a participant in the African campaign, Dyckerhoff was taken prisoner in Tunis in 1943, most of which he spent in Texas (USA). After his return home in June 1946, he worked on the company chronicle until he was able to resume his work as a full member of the Board of Management in 1948. He was Spokesman of the Board of Management from 1959-65 and became a member of the Supervisory Board in 1966. From 1954-67, Dyckerhoff was President of the Wiesbaden Chamber of Industry and Commerce, of which he later became Honorary President.

Dyckerhoff was involved in numerous national and international cement industry associations. He was Chairman of the "Concrete in Transportation" Committee, a member of the Consultative Committee of the European Coal and Steel Community in Luxembourg, a member of the Board of the Road Research Association and President of the International Road Federation in Geneva. Dyckerhoff was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with Star and the Silver Badge of Honor of the City of Wiesbaden.
