German traffic law consists of a large number of different laws. The most important laws of traffic law are the Road Traffic Act (StVG) and, based on this legal foundation, the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).

Traffic monitoring measures contribute to improving road safety. Traffic and speed checks are part of traffic monitoring. These tasks are performed by the city police and the state police.

The "city police – traffic" ensures safety and order in road traffic by performing numerous essential tasks.

The "city police – traffic" ensures general traffic monitoring. Among other things, it detects traffic violations and other administrative offenses in stationary and moving traffic (e.g., parking violations, speeding violations, red light violations). It is responsible for the compulsory de-registration of vehicles. Furthermore, it arranges for towing measures in the event of traffic violations and the removal of unregistered vehicles from public traffic areas. It ensures traffic regulations in public traffic areas. Its responsibilities also include fire department inspection drives. It accepts reports of malfunctions at parking ticket machines. Last but not least, it also ensures compliance with regulations for the special use of public traffic areas.
