Basic income support in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity (SGB XII)

Are you no longer able to pursue gainful employment for health or age reasons and cannot finance your necessary living expenses yourself? Then you can apply for basic income support in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity.

Basic income support for the elderly and for those with reduced earning capacity is part of Germany’s minimum social security systems. The benefits provided by these systems ensure a dignified minimum standard of living.

  • Basic income support for the elderly and those with reduced earning capacity ensures that people in financial distress have the necessary means to support themselves.

Eligibility for and the amount of basic income support for the elderly and those with reduced earning capacity depend on your individual needs and your existing income and assets.

Total needs consist of the following components:

  • Standard needs
  • Reasonable expenses for housing and heating
  • Any additional needs
  • any educational needs for students of legal age
  • In individual cases, contributions toward health and long-term care insurance

In addition, you may receive one-time benefits in special situations, such as for initial furnishings for your home.

In addition to your individual needs, your income and assets—if any—are taken into account. You must first use these to cover your living expenses. Exceptions include tax-exempt allowances and exempt assets.
