"With justice against power" - a conversation

Wolfgang Kaleck - lawyer and founder of the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights - will be speaking with Birgit Weyhe, author of the book "Schweigen" (Silence), on Friday, June 6, at 6 pm at the Kunsthaus. The talk will take place as part of the exhibition "I will not remain silent" at the Kunsthaus.

Lawyer Wolfgang Kaleck

Birgit Weyhe will be presenting her new graphic novel "Schweigen" (Silence) at the Kunsthaus on June 6 at 6 pm, which commemorates two women and their fates. Ellen Marx, a 17-year-old German Jew who emigrated to Buenos Aires in 1939. Her entire family perished in the Holocaust. In the 1970s, her daughter Nora "disappeared" during the Argentinean military dictatorship. The other is the student Elisabeth Käsemann, who was executed in Argentina in 1977 for her political activities.

Wolfgang Kaleck, an internationally active human rights lawyer and renowned expert on the history of Argentina, talks about Ellen Marx, who tried in vain for decades to track down her daughter's murderers and bring them to justice. He represented the case before the German judiciary and in 1999 filed a lawsuit on behalf of the German-born relatives of the victims of the Argentinean military dictatorship, first with the Berlin public prosecutor's office and later at the Nuremberg Higher Regional Court. However, the Nora Marx case was never brought to trial, as the courts declared that they had no jurisdiction on the grounds that the victims were not German.

The discussion will be moderated by Jakob Hoffmann, curator of the exhibition "Ich werde nicht schweigen. Drawn Memory in Comics", as part of which the event is taking place. It is supported by the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain and the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

Admission is free.
