In his works, Christian Naujoks fundamentally challenges the notion of “normal” hearing by placing hearing impairments at the center as a creative starting point. The title [a noise in the ear like the wind] draws on the widespread image of describing tinnitus and other auditory noises as the sound of the wind. This metaphor for a physical condition also points to the interconnectedness of humans and the environment. Drawing on his own experiences with hearing impairments, Naujoks takes an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the political, physical, and relational dimensions of hearing. In doing so, he brings audio captions—text-based representations of sound events—into focus as an art form in their own right, thereby challenging our notions of objective sensory perception.

At the Nassauischer Kunstverein in Wiesbaden, Naujoks builds on the work of key Fluxus artists such as Annea Lockwood and Mieko Shiomi. Through his artistic exploration, he opens up new perspectives on their work and draws attention to the connection between sound, the body, and space.

By combining film, sound installations, and participatory scores, Christian Naujoks makes sounds perceptible to the senses in a variety of ways. Furthermore, he incorporates ambient noise and the city’s acoustic environment to create a multi-layered sound experience. This not only opens up new approaches to art but also creates a space for shared listening and for experiencing different forms of perception.
