During pregnancy, you are entitled to all necessary medical services, such as preventive checkups, inpatient delivery, or necessary remedies, as well as the help and care of a midwife. The costs are usually covered by your health insurance.

Humanitarian consultation hour

Women without health insurance receive these services free of charge and, if desired, anonymously through the "Humanitarian Consultation Hour." Here
, they can also receive assistance with necessary applications and give birth free of charge at a clinic in Wiesbaden.

Confidential birth

This service is aimed at women who, for various reasons, wish to keep their pregnancy and motherhood secret. The pregnancy counseling centers offer anonymous and confidential advice in this difficult situation. Maternity protection

As a pregnant employee, you are entitled to special health protection. The Maternity Protection Act regulates the rights and obligations of employees and employers during pregnancy (6 weeks before the birth and 8 weeks after the calculated date of birth).
Important areas of labor law include protection against dismissal, occupational health and safety regulations, the payment of maternity benefits during the maternity protection period, and preventive care benefits. Similar protective
regulations apply to civil servants.

Maternity benefit

As a pregnant woman, you are entitled to "maternity pay" regardless of your nationality. You receive maternity pay without any deductions such as taxes, pension contributions, or health insurance.
For employees, this benefit is paid by the statutory health insurance fund and the difference to the previous net income is paid by the employer.

There are different regulations for maternity allowance for:

  • Self-employed persons with statutory health insurance (maternity allowance equal to sick pay)
  • Self-employed persons with private health insurance (individual regulations of the insurance companies)
  • Those with family insurance (one-time payment)
  • Those with private insurance (employer subsidy)
  • civil servants (full entitlement to salary)
  • Unemployed women who are covered by statutory insurance (maternity allowance via health insurance)
  • Unemployed women who receive citizen's income are not entitled to maternity allowance. However, they continue to receive citizen's income

Advice and assistance with the application process is available from the counseling centers
pro familia Wiesbaden, Diakonisches Werk Wiesbaden, Donum Vitae, and Sozialdienst katholischer Frauen e.V. Wiesbaden.

Assistance and material aid

If you need assistance, for example to claim maintenance payments, you can contact the relevant social services (guardianship).

Material assistance for pregnant women

The federal foundation "Mutter und Kind" (Mother and Child) supports pregnant women on low incomes with a one-off payment (e.g. for maternity clothes, baby clothes or furnishings for the child). The application must be submitted to a pregnancy counseling center.

Recipients of citizen's income or social assistance are entitled to "pregnancy-related additional needs" and a subsidy for initial equipment from the 13th week of pregnancy. You can submit your application to your contact person at the social benefits and job center.
