Waldhof Mannheim as guest

SVWW has a home game on Matchday 34. On Sunday, April 19, former Bundesliga side SV Waldhof Mannheim will visit the Brita-Arena for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. That should bring an end to the team’s five-game winless streak. But it’s a tough match; both teams are stuck in the middle of the table, with Mannheim already safe and Wiesbaden having squandered their chance at promotion. We’ll see on game day whether Coach Scherning makes significant lineup changes at the start, as he did against Havelse and Cologne.

Fourth defeat in a row, 1:2 in Cologne

Just as he had done in the 1-4 loss to Havelse, Wiesbaden coach Daniel Scherning made several substitutions, bringing on Janitzek, Suarez, May, Schleimer, Flotho, and Kalem for Neubert, Bogicevic, Greilinger, Kaya, Agrafiotis, and Johansson. In the end, the result was far from impressive. The hosts had their first (header) chance after just under 20 minutes through Kloss and were now in the game. Cologne had Wiesbaden under control, but there were no clear-cut chances until just before halftime. But then, following a defensive error by SVWW, Cologne took a 1-0 lead through Wolf. And that wasn’t all: three minutes later, Wolf scored again—assisted once more by Otto—to make it 2-0. Without a single real scoring opportunity, Wehen Wiesbaden went into halftime trailing 0-2.

In the second half, SVWW opened the play with a chance, but May’s shot at his former home ground whizzed past the goal. The visitors were now playing more offensively than in the first half, but they created hardly any clear-cut chances. And yet, SVWW was back in the game after 63 minutes. Ronstadt, as the last man, fouled May and was sent off with a red card. Then, after 70 minutes, Wiesbaden was awarded a penalty for a handball, and Flotho narrowed the score to 1-2. Wiesbaden pushed for the equalizer, but Viktoria’s defense held firm, and so the team lost its fourth consecutive match with a 1-2 score. One could almost get the impression that the team is counting down the days until the end of the season following its elimination from the promotion race. However, SVWW should not simply give away the remaining games or the season.
