Sculpture "Dedicated to water"
The walk-in tubular sculpture by Winter/Hoerbelt towers over the Rhine in Mainz-Kastel and impressively reflects the landscape and the water.
Art directly on the water
Frankfurt artists Wolfgang Winter and Berthold Hörbelt won an artistic competition in 2020. They won the competition with their design for a walk-in sculpture made of folded stainless steel. The sculpture not only lies on the bank, but also protrudes into the Rhine. Its tubular shape symbolizes the networking and conduit systems of the modern world. The mirrored and gridded surface reflects its surroundings and changes with the light, weather and seasons.
The work invites you to linger with its integrated seating. Its clear form and metallic surface also make it a landmark along the Leinpfad regional park route.
The sculpture not only offers art, but also a place of discovery.
A new point of experience
The sculpture "Dedicated to Water" was inaugurated in May 2022. It enriches the Rhine embankment promenade and is part of the Rhein.Main.Ufer concept, which aims to make local recreation on the banks even more attractive.
The project was sponsored by the RhineMain Regional Park with the support of Fraport AG.
Art competition and winning design
The aim of the competition was to create a work of art that shows the importance of water for the Wiesbaden landscape. It was important that it:
- enhance the Rhine embankment promenade,
- can be experienced by the population,
- be designed to be site- and context-related,
- remain permanent.
An eight-member jury selected the design by Winter/Hoerbelt as the winner. Second prize went to Jeroen Doorenweerd from Tilburg, Netherlands. Chris Drury from Great Britain took third place. The artist quartet Observatorium from Rotterdam received a recognition prize. The competition was accompanied by curator Heike Strelow-Meister.
