Social cohesion: Biebrich-Mitte

Children's playground Am Schlosspark

The playground on the eastern edge of Biebrich Palace Park is an important place for children, families and visitors to the park to play, relax and socialize.

Design planning for children's playground Am Schlosspark
Children's playground Am Schlosspark.

Due to heavy use and the advanced age of the play equipment, which must be dismantled for safety reasons, a complete redesign is being implemented by the Parks Department of the state capital of Wiesbaden with funding from the urban development program "Social Cohesion Biebrich-Mitte." The goal is to once again offer children an attractive and safe play area.

Since the existing climbing facility in the northern part of the property is primarily designed for older children, the redesign in the southern part is specifically aimed at younger children. The plans were developed in a comprehensive participation process together with citizens of all ages and implemented in consultation with the monument protection authorities.

Plans include a sand play area with a water play facility and pump, a play carriage with "lost luggage," an inclusive carousel, a castle as an exciting climbing and balancing facility with a slide, a three-part trampoline, a double swing, a parasol, and a centrally located seating wall roundabout and additional seating. In addition, a green frame consisting of seven newly planted trees and shrubs will be created along the castle park wall. Natural materials such as natural stone paving for edging and paths, natural stone blocks for seating walls and boundaries also contribute to the natural ambience. This significantly improves the microclimate of the playground.

The total cost of the redesign is around €535,000. Only water-permeable surfaces such as water-bound paving will be used for the paths, while wood chips and sand will be used for the play areas. This will allow surface water to seep away on site and counteract overheating in the district.
