More and more people are living alone in their later years—a lifestyle that brings both opportunities and challenges. How can people age independently and with care without losing touch with others?

Demographic change is leading to a growing proportion of older adults living alone. Among the causes are rising life expectancy, changing family structures, and the mobility of younger generations. Living alone can be an expression of autonomy, but it also increases the risk of social isolation, health problems, and limited participation in society.

At the same time, aging is often accompanied by increased vulnerability. Physical limitations, health risks, financial uncertainties, or the loss of loved ones can impair independence. This makes reliable social networks, accessible support services, and a society based on solidarity all the more important.

This gives rise to social policy and infrastructural challenges. At the same time, individual responsibility is becoming increasingly important: self-care in old age means actively looking after one’s own physical, mental, and social well-being.

Overall, this requires a shift in perspective: aging is not merely a matter of care, but a shared responsibility between society and the individual.

The conference will highlight scientific findings and practical approaches to identify ways in which older adults can live self-determined, connected, and in solidarity with others.
