World War II bomb in Erbenheim: Information on the evacuation

From 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, a World War II bomb in the area of the Lucius D. Clay barracks in Erbenheim will be defused or detonated in a controlled manner. The affected area must be evacuated by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13.

A map of the evacuation area and up-to-date information are available at wiesbaden.de/krisenfall (opens in a new tab). Those affected can also call the public information hotline at (0611) 318080.

Traffic disruptions are expected on Wednesday morning, particularly on the A66. The highway will be closed between Erbenheim and Nordenstadt from 10:30 a.m. until the operation is complete. Access from the B455 to the Lucius D. Clay Barracks and the Mechtildshausen Estate will also be closed from 10:30 a.m. until the operation is complete. All other roads and dirt roads within the evacuation zone will be closed starting at 9:00 a.m.

Throughout the Erbenheim area, delays may occur in the ESWE Verkehr bus network during the operation. Buses will be rerouted, bypassing the area starting no later than 9:30 a.m. until the end of the operation and largely avoiding Erbenheim. The following routes are planned.

Line 28: Normal route to the Berliner Straße stop, then right onto Siegfriedring to Mainzer Straße, then left onto Mainzer Straße via the A671 to Kastel and on to the normal route.

Lines 46 and 48: Route similar to Line 15 via Nordenstadt.

After the discovery of the 500-kilogram World War II bomb on Tuesday afternoon, May 12, it was secured and a crisis management team was convened. The team met for the first time early Tuesday evening and is coordinating all measures related to the defusing or controlled detonation of the bomb. State and city police informed the slightly more than fifty people living in the evacuation zone about the evacuation on Tuesday evening. Emergency responders rang doorbells and made announcements over loudspeakers.

There is no general answer to how long the defusing or controlled detonation of World War II bombs takes. This depends on numerous factors. In addition to origin, design, and ignition system, local conditions play a role. Emergency responders will announce the end of the evacuation via the media (newspapers, radio, broadcasts, etc.) and through on-site loudspeaker announcements. The end of the evacuation will also be announced at wiesbaden.de/krisenfall (opens in a new tab).
