Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Interagency Business Inspections

From Thursday, October 22, through Friday, October 23, officers from the Wiesbaden Police Department, together with the tax investigation unit, customs, and the city police, conducted business inspections in Wiesbaden. Between 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., several inspections took place in the city center as well as in the Kostheim and Kastel neighborhoods.

The goal of the interagency inspections was to uncover and consistently prosecute potential violations of applicable laws. The inspections proved successful: At several commercial properties, the enforcement teams discovered approximately 320 illegal nicotine pouches, known as “snus,” some of which were openly displayed in sales racks, while others were hidden under sales counters or in adjacent storage rooms. The goods were seized, and appropriate legal proceedings were initiated. Customs officials identified approximately 50 illegal e-cigarettes (vapes) that exceeded the permissible limits for nicotine content. In addition, the city police noticed that several beverages were being sold without the required deposit labels. Furthermore, the tax investigation unit uncovered cash register discrepancies that were not adequately documented.

In total, five commercial establishments were inspected; the police filed four criminal charges under the Tobacco Products Act and one charge for a violation of the Residence Act. In addition, there were three violations of the Tax Code, two further violations of the Tobacco Products Act, three violations of the Packaging Act, and two violations of the Price Indication Regulation.

The results of the joint inspections reflect the success of this collaboration. The participating authorities will continue to work closely together to verify compliance with legal requirements and consistently pursue any violations that are identified.

This is a joint press release from the West Hesse Police Headquarters and the City of Wiesbaden.
