Smart solar benches

Experience data from the eight smart solar benches in Wiesbaden live - it's possible here.

Wiesbaden is on its way to becoming a smart city - and sometimes you can tell at first glance. The eight smart solar benches in the city are a good example of this: they not only provide comfortable seating, but also charge smartphones with solar power and record important environmental data in real time.

Real-time data in the dashboard

The interactive solar bank dashboard makes the collected data visible to all citizens:

  • Electricity yield
  • CO₂ savings
  • Energy consumption
  • Frequency of use

This makes the effects of the solar benches transparent and shows how digital technologies and citizen participation can work together.

Developed from youthful ideas

The first two benches were installed at the Dern'schen site on the initiative of the 2023 Youth Conference. The idea was a hit - six more locations have since been added. The project is a joint effort by the Department of Social Work, the Parks Department and the Departments of Social Affairs and Smart City, Europe and Public Order.

The solar benches are street furniture with added value: sustainable, digital and open to all. They show how Smart City can be seen and experienced on a small scale - directly on site in people's everyday lives.
