Local elections (city council, local council and foreigners' council elections) 2026
In these elections, representatives for three municipal bodies are elected in Wiesbaden: for the city council, the members of the local advisory council for each of the 26 local districts and the members of the advisory council for foreigners. Next election date: March 15, 2026.
The electoral system is based on proportional representation. All eligible voters have as many votes as there are seats to be allocated: In Wiesbaden, 81 votes for the election of the city council, between five and 17 votes for the election of the respective local advisory council (depending on the number of inhabitants) and 31 votes for the election of the foreigners' advisory council. Eligible voters can give candidates up to three votes (cumulation) and distribute the votes among candidates from different nominations (parties and electoral associations) (panashing). If, on the other hand, only one nomination is permitted, elections are held according to the principles of majority voting. The election period is five years.
On May 6, 2020, the Hessian state parliament passed the Act to Improve the Political Participation of Foreign Residents in Local Politics and to Amend Local and Electoral Law Provisions, which came into force on May 16, 2020. According to this, elections to the Foreigners' Advisory Council will in future be held at the same time as the general municipal elections.
In 2021, the city of Wiesbaden was divided into 191 general and 69 postal voting districts.
