Re-registration of a vehicle that has been taken out of service

If you want to use your deregistered vehicle on public roads again, you must first re-register it.

This is referred to as re-registration to the same owner if you are the person who was previously registered as the owner of the vehicle.

If there has been a change of owner, this is referred to as re-registration to a different owner.

You can submit the application in person at your local registration authority and, in many regions, also online, or you can appoint a representative to do so on your behalf. If your vehicle has been out of service for more than 7 years, you cannot register the vehicle online.

Under certain conditions, you can also apply for a different license plate.

After approximately 7 years, the vehicle and owner data are deleted from the Central Vehicle Register. If you need a certificate of conformity, data confirmation, or certificate of individual vehicle approval for re-registration, you must submit a corresponding report from a recognized specialist agency.

Note: Applicants and owners who have an information block entered in the register of residents are advised to present a certificate of registration promptly at the interview. If a certificate of registration is not presented, processing may be delayed or the application may even be rejected, as a manual query must then be made at the citizens' office.
