The history of the Artothek

In 1999, the Cultural Affairs Office was still located in the City Archives building, “Im Rad,” before moving to the basement of the Kunsthaus’s new building in 2011. Through an innovative approach to art education, the city’s art collection—which was initially housed in Villa Clementine—was made accessible to all residents of Wiesbaden and people living in the region. Over 1,500 art enthusiasts are already members of the Artothek. In 2024, the Artothek celebrated its 25th anniversary with a major anniversary exhibition featuring works by 40 artists from Wiesbaden.

The Artothek Wiesbaden is a member of the Artothekenverband Deutschland e.V. Since 2000, the association has represented the interests of public art lending institutions in Germany, advocates for art lending in Germany as a valuable educational and cultural offering, and facilitates the exchange of professional expertise.
