Mayor Christiane Hinninger states: “The redesign of the playground by the Parks and Recreation Department has been a complete success. Biebrich is densely populated and therefore needs play and recreation areas for children and teenagers. This makes this playground—right on our doorstep—all the more important. It encourages imaginative play and, nestled in the unique surroundings of the castle park, offers a shady spot—especially on hot days.”

Dr. Patricia Becher, Head of Social Affairs, says: “For us, the newly redesigned playground at the Castle Park is, above all, an important contribution to the social infrastructure and to the enhancement of the residential environment in Biebrich-Mitte. Children and families, in particular, need safe, consumption-free places close to home where they can meet, be active, and spend time together. It is particularly important that local children, families, and organizations were able to contribute their ideas. This is a central tenet of urban development funding under the Social Cohesion program: not only to further develop neighborhoods structurally, but also to strengthen quality of life, participation, and neighborly ties together with the local community.”

The state capital placed particular emphasis on citizen participation. As early as the planning phase, children, parents, and interested members of the public were able to contribute their ideas and wishes. Many of the proposed play features were incorporated into the design. A key focus was on accessibility and inclusion. Numerous pieces of playground equipment and recreational areas were designed so that children with different abilities can use them together.

For adults, there are recreational areas with additional seating. New trees, additional landscaping, and a sunshade enhance the quality of the outdoor experience around the playground.

The redesign was carried out with a total budget of approximately 520,000 euros as part of the urban development program “Social Cohesion Biebrich-Mitte.” The project helps to sustainably improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and enhance public spaces for all generations.
