Wiesbaden's public transit network reform begins on October 3, 2027
The start date has now been set: The public transit network reform in Wiesbaden will begin on October 3, 2027. The start date, originally planned for August, was postponed to the fall break in coordination with the state capital, Mainz. This allows for a two-week transition period during the fall break, when traffic is lighter.
“A route network overhaul of this magnitude must be carefully planned. In Wiesbaden, numerous measures need to be organized: bus stops must be modified, around 80 new bus platforms must be installed, and 15 new bus stops must be created. This takes time and close coordination—including with the state capital, Mainz, through which important routes pass. Construction sites there will be cleared by fall. We want everything to run smoothly from the start and for every citizen to be fully informed,” says Marc Dahlen, head of the transportation department.
As part of the route network reform, around 900 existing bus stops will be equipped with new signage. In addition, the regional council plans to process new concessions—that is, official approvals—for approximately 50 routes. The basic structure of the current bus network has remained unchanged for over 60 years and has been completely overhauled for the reform. The system, which has evolved over time, no longer meets the city’s modern mobility needs.
Preparations have been underway at ESWE Verkehr for some time. At the same time, necessary adjustments to the road network and other measures for implementation are currently being organized. A key component is keeping passengers informed. The communication strategy commissioned by ESWE Verkehr is currently being developed and is expected to be finalized in October. Following that, the rollout of an extensive campaign will begin; it will launch this year and be intensified with a strong public focus starting in early 2027.
“Our goal is for every passenger to know in advance what is changing on their route and how they can get around in the future. To achieve this, we are relying on clear and wide-reaching communication—from in-person information at the sites to digital offerings. We aim to specifically reach students, seniors, and all other target groups,” emphasizes Marion Hebding, Managing Director of ESWE Verkehr.
