Property tax

Property tax is a tax on real property (also known as a property-based tax). It is based on the ownership, characteristics, and value of a piece of real property. It is levied by the municipality in whose jurisdiction the property is located. Property located within the country is subject to this tax.

Real property includes

  • agricultural and forestry property (Property Tax A),
  • real estate and business assets (Property Tax B).

The tax office is responsible for assessing the value of individual properties.

The unit value forms the basis for the taxable amount. The municipality (town or city) sets the assessment rate in its budget ordinance and issues the property tax assessment notice. The taxable amount multiplied by the assessment rate equals the tax due.
