The driving license for categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E is issued for a maximum of five years and can be extended by five years at the request of the license holder.
The application to renew a driver's license should be submitted no later than six weeks before the old driver's license expires.

Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g., ID card, passport)
Current driver’s license
A recent photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric-compliant, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait orientation)
Proof of vision in accordance with the template in Appendix 6, No. 2, of the Driver’s License Regulation.
You may have this certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, an occupational physician, or a physician at the public health department. An issued medical report or certificate is valid for 2 years.
Proof of physical and mental fitness in accordance with the template in Appendix 5 of the Driver’s License Regulation
You may have the certificate issued by any physician. At the time of application, the certificate must not be more than one year old.
Additionally, for Classes D, D1, DE, and D1E, if you are 50 years of age or older, a performance psychology assessment is required. This assessment must not be older than one year at the time of application.
A biometric photo can be taken on site (a self-service terminal for digital photo capture is available. Costs 6,00 Euro)
Fees
The fee is based on the current version of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
Persons who drive a truck or bus for a living are obliged to provide proof of an initial qualification or further training. The obligation to provide proof applies to persons who hold or are applying for a driving license for categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. This only applies if the driving license is to be used commercially in road haulage or passenger transport. In order to use the services of the driving license authority, you must be registered as having your main residence in Wiesbaden.
