Traffic trial on the banks of the Rhine at Biebrich in summer 2025.
At its meeting on March 12, the Biebrich local council decided on a temporary traffic trial on the car-free banks of the Rhine. For this reason, Rheingaustraße in the section from Am Parkfeld street to Wilhelm-Kopp-Straße will be closed to car traffic and designated as a cycle lane on the first four weekends in August - from 6 p.m. on Fridays to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
The aim of the car-free banks of the Rhine is to improve the quality of life and the quality of stay, and above all to reduce noise and air pollution caused by car and truck traffic. It is also intended to create significantly more space for movement and to separate pedestrian traffic from bicycle traffic in front of Biebrich Palace.
A traffic trial is a temporary measure in the street area in which a new traffic routing or regulation is tested in order to examine and evaluate its effects before a permanent decision is made. The aim is to improve the safety, order and efficiency of traffic and to test the acceptance of the proposed changes by those affected.
Access for residents is possible at all times via the "Anlieger frei" regulation, but only from the direction of Rathausstraße. Authorized residents such as delivery and parcel services, care services and similar can access the area of Elisabethenstraße, Am Schloßpark and Rheingaustraße between Am Schloßpark and Rathausstraße at any time.
The area in front of Biebrich Palace will be completely closed to motorized traffic.
Bus services are also affected by this regulation. There will be no changes for lines 3, 4 and 39, while lines 9 and 14 will be rerouted according to ESWE-Verkehr's plans. The bus stop "Schloß Biebrich" will not be served during the traffic test.
Questions & Answers (FAQ) on the Biebrich Rhine embankment traffic trial in summer 2025
Why is there a traffic test?
The Biebrich local council approved the traffic trial at its meeting on March 12. The aim of the car-free banks of the Rhine is to improve the quality of life on the banks and, above all, to reduce noise and air pollution caused by car and truck traffic. In addition, this should create significantly more space for movement and lead to a separation of pedestrian traffic from bicycle traffic in front of Biebrich Palace. A temporary traffic trial is therefore recommended with a view to acceptance and the impact on the surrounding area. As a cultural and historical highlight, Biebrich Palace attracts just as many international visitors as the inner-city tourist destinations. This destination on the banks of the Rhine should be highlighted as a calling card for Biebrich and Wiesbaden as a whole.
Why a cycle lane?
The aim of keeping through traffic away from the banks of the Rhine and at the same time keeping the residential area around Elisabethenstrasse accessible for residents can best be achieved by signposting it as a cycle route.

What is a traffic test?
A traffic trial is a temporary measure in the road space in which a new traffic routing or regulation is tested in order to examine and evaluate its effects before a permanent decision is made. The aim is to improve the safety, order and efficiency of traffic and to test the acceptance of the proposed changes by those affected.

How do I get to my house?
Access is possible at all times. However, access is only possible via the "Anlieger frei" regulation from the direction of Rathausstraße, as the area in front of Biebrich Palace is completely closed to motorized traffic.
What do I do if I want to visit someone in the area? - Signage Residents free
Authorized residents such as delivery and parcel services, care services and the like can access the area of Elisabethenstraße, Am Schlosspark and Rheingaustraße between Am Schlosspark and Rathausstraße at any time. The area of Rheingaustraße in front of Biebrich Palace is reserved for bicycle traffic; cars, buses and trucks are not permitted here.
Why are some parking spaces being temporarily removed?
Due to the opening of Wilhelm-Kopp-Straße to two-way traffic, parking spaces have to be removed there at weekends to make room for a second lane. Two lanes are needed to allow traffic to move in opposite directions in this area. For this purpose, the parking lane will be converted into one lane at weekends. The one-way street in Adolf-Todt-Straße will be turned continuously for the trial period of four weeks. This will make it possible to avoid having to change the traffic routing at relatively short intervals and having to re-park the vehicles parked there. This ensures that disruption to the local population is minimized during the trial period. At the parking lot in front of the customs warehouse, parking spaces will be removed to allow the intended transfer of bicycle traffic coming from the direction of Amöneburg from the riverbank to Rheingaustraße.
How can I reach Biebrich Palace?
The best way to reach Biebricher Schloss during the closure is by public transport. Lines 4 and 9 run directly to the "Rheinufer/Rheingaustraße" stop. From there, Biebrich Palace is only a few minutes' walk away via the car-free Reingaustraße. Authorized visitors, suppliers and employees who use the Am Schlosspark access road may drive into the closed area from Rathausstraße (except Rheingaustraße in front of Biebrich Palace). In addition to Rheingaustraße, the street Am Schlosspark in the direction of Mainstraße is also available for exiting the closed area. Visitors, suppliers and employees who wish to use the Am Parkfeld access road or park outside the palace are unfortunately not allowed to pass through the closed area. The street Am Parkfeld with the parking spaces there can be reached from the west via Äppelallee and Albert-Schweitzer-Allee (parking spaces not available on August 16, see next question). Appropriate signage has been installed.
Is the flea market taking place?
The flea market in the street Am Parkfeld will take place as planned on August 16. Rheingaustraße will be a dead end for motor vehicles from Albert-Schweitzer-Allee on this day.
How do the bus routes run on the four weekends?
There will be no changes for lines 3, 4 and 39. Lines 9 and 14 will be rerouted according to ESWE-Verkehr's plans. The route of line 14 in Albert-Schweitzer-Allee will be "reversed", i.e. those wishing to travel towards the city center will have to use the stops on the east side, unlike usual. The "Schloss Biebrich" stop will not be served during the traffic test.
How does the ESWE bus route 14 operate on the four weekends?
How does ESWE bus route 9 operate on the four weekends?
Why is the one-way street "Am Schlosspark" being turned?
During the traffic trial, several large events will take place at Biebrich Palace. To improve the logistics required for this, the one-way street "Am Schlosspark" will be turned around and the exit towards Mainstraße will be opened. It should be noted that there will be increased checks in the street "Am Schlosspark" to ensure compliance with road traffic regulations, in particular to ensure the passage of trucks.
