Noise pollution is shown in maps produced by the Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG). Similar noise levels are color-coded there. The maps can be viewed in the Hessen Noise Viewer, where you can also check the noise pollution at a specific place of residence.

Noise action planning is based on noise mapping.
It assesses the noise situation and develops noise reduction measures—together with the public and specialist authorities.

The results are published in the Hesse Noise Action Plan, which is reviewed every five years and revised as necessary.

EU Directive 2002/49/EC establishes a framework for reducing environmental noise. It was transposed into German law in 2005 and incorporated into Sections 47a-f of the Federal Immission Control Act.
