Provision enables self-determination - Living in old age in Wiesbaden

GereNETZ's theme for 2026 is "Provision enables self-determination - living in old age in Wiesbaden".

Living a self-determined life—this is a core value for many people. Making decisions independently, expressing one’s wishes, and shaping one’s life according to personal preferences is what defines quality of life. Yet, especially in old age, this self-determination can be limited by illness, accidents, or declining physical strength. This makes it all the more important to plan ahead.

No one likes to think about the possibility of one day no longer being able to make their own decisions. Yet experience in caregiving and medicine shows that a sudden illness or accident can happen to anyone—regardless of age. Those who have not made arrangements in advance will no longer be able to make important decisions for themselves.

Planning ahead can provide clarity. It ensures that personal values and wishes are respected—even when one can no longer express them oneself. This year’s annual theme of GereNETZ is “Planning Ahead Enables Self-Determination” and offers a holistic perspective on the topic. With this annual theme, the focus shifts to prevention. Prevention means identifying risks early, preventing them, and strengthening one’s own resources. Those who take preventive action take responsibility for shaping their own lives

However, self-determination is not only an individual issue but also a social one. Loneliness can make people ill and significantly reduce their quality of life. A stable social network, regular contact, and social participation have a preventive effect—they promote mental stability and resilience.

Planning for the future is not a one-time decision. Life circumstances change. That is why arrangements made should be reviewed regularly and adjusted as needed.

In light of demographic change, addressing the topic of planning for the future is becoming increasingly important. An open approach not only empowers individuals but also contributes to a responsible societal approach to aging and care.

Self-determination in old age does not begin only upon retirement. It begins with conscious planning and clear decisions in the here and now. Those who plan for the future take responsibility for their own lives—and ensure that their voice is heard even in difficult times.
