Equal Pay Day
Equal Pay Day marks the day of equal pay between men and women: It is the day until which women still have to work on average to realize the same salary that men have already earned on 31 December of the previous year.
On average, women in Germany earn 16 percent less than men. The Federal Statistical Office has calculated that women will earn an average of 22.24 euros gross per hour in 2024 - 4.10 euros less than men at 26.34 euros.
This income gap is known as the gender pay gap. It indicates the percentage by which the average gross hourly wage of women is lower than that of men.
Converted into working days, this means that women in Germany work unpaid for the first 58 days of the year.
Equal Pay Day on March 7, 2025 - campaign at the town hall
On March 7, 2025, an Equal Pay Day campaign took place in the foyer of Wiesbaden City Hall. The day draws attention to the existing pay gap of 16% on average, which means that women would have to work around two months longer to achieve the same annual income as men.
Citizens were able to find out about the causes and effects of the gender pay gap and discuss possible solutions. Despite progress, pay inequality remains a major challenge - an issue that needs to be discussed and addressed further.
