Vibrant centers Downtown West
Since 2014, the "Innenstadt-West" area has been part of the "Lebendige Zentren" urban development program - formerly "Aktive Kernbereiche". In addition, the "Inner Westend Social Cohesion" program - formerly "Socially Integrative City" - is being continued here.
The adjacent development areas offer Wiesbaden the opportunity to develop a comprehensive urban development strategy to strengthen the western center. Until July 2024, SEG Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft was responsible for program management on behalf of the state capital of Wiesbaden.
To ensure that city centers remain places of encounter, exchange, and identification for all in the future, the urban development program "Lebendige Zentren" (Lively Centers) focuses on the preservation and further development of lively city centers and town centers that foster a sense of identity. The focus is on construction measures that accompany the transformation of the city center: The aim is to secure and improve the supply situation, upgrade existing living space, and preserve the architectural heritage. Energy efficiency and climate protection play a central role in this. A healthy urban climate, short distances, and inviting urban spaces with a variety of functions and amenities are decisive location factors. Implementation takes place at the municipal level in close cooperation with local actors, who act both as multipliers and as sponsors of their own initiatives.
The approximately 25-hectare planning area in the west of Wiesbaden encompasses the western center. It is bordered by Schwalbacher Straße and Oranienstraße in the west and Kirchgasse and Moritzstraße in the east. Due to its location within the urban fabric, this area forms the link between the inner-city shopping district and the Westend. In the north, the area encompasses large parts of the shopping zone, in particular the Kirchgasse pedestrian zone, which plays a central role in retail. In the south, residential uses close to the city center dominate between Rheinstraße and Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring. Moritzstraße is characterized by a variety of uses, with retail, service sector, and local supply offerings.
In cooperation with local stakeholders, an integrated action plan was developed and approved by the city council in October 2015. The aim was to further develop and upgrade the core area in terms of urban planning. The focus was on setting functional guidelines for the use of various areas and improving the urban structural links with adjacent inner-city locations. Measures (opens in a new tab) such as the redesign of Hochstättenstraße and Gemeindebadgässchen, the renovation of the Schützenhofstraße staircase, and the conversion of Gerichtstraße into a pedestrian zone (opens in a new tab) have already been completed. The development of the Walhalla (opens in a new tab) is also being implemented with funding from the "Lebendige Zentren" (Lively Centers) program.
