School social work at elementary school - structure of services
How school social work, as part of youth welfare, offers preventative support for pupils and their families through a variety of services and collaborations.
Structure of school social work services at elementary school
The School Social Work for Children program has been offered by the Youth Services division of the Wiesbaden Office of Social Work since 1990 and is firmly embedded in the daily life of the participating elementary schools. As a link between children, families, schools, youth services, and other partners, it provides early support and accompanies children throughout their elementary school years.
The focus is always on the child and their individual strengths, needs, and life circumstances. School social workers promote social and personal skills, provide support when challenges arise, and create spaces where children can experience a sense of community, try new things, and continue to develop.
Services range from regular work with entire classes to small-group activities and remedial programs, as well as individual counseling and support. Parents, guardians, and teachers also find reliable points of contact in the school social work program.
Our services:
- Grade-level class support during school hours, covering topics such as social learning, class community, conflict resolution, children’s rights, emotions, and media literacy
- Starter Club in 1st grade to support the transition from preschool to elementary school
- “Ready for 5th Grade” in 4th grade to prepare students for the transition to middle school
- Competency Development Program (KEP) as a preventive small-group program to strengthen personal and social skills
- Social-educational afternoon programs tailored to the children’s interests and needs
- Vacation programs and projects, such as field trips, sleepovers, and group vacation projects
- Counseling and support for parents and guardians on parenting, school, and life issues
- Professional consultation for teachers, including on social-educational issues and child protection
- Cooperation and networking with schools, youth welfare services, and other institutions in the neighborhood.
School social work intervenes early and provides ongoing support to children during a critical phase of their development. Through close collaboration with families, schools, and network partners, support needs can be identified early, strengths can be nurtured, and appropriate solutions can be developed collaboratively.
