"Ice-Cold Business": Lecture at the City Archives
On Tuesday, June 30, at 6 p.m., technology journalist Peter Thomas will give a lecture at the Wiesbaden City Archives, Im Rad 42, on the topic “Ice-Cold Business: Carl von Linde and the Triumph of Artificial Refrigeration.” Please register at veranstaltung-stadtarchiv@wiesbaden.
From refrigerators to data center air conditioning: Applications of artificial cooling became widely established, particularly in the 20th century. Today, they are an indispensable part of everyday life. This lecture traces the use of refrigeration from the 19th to the 21st century: from traditional natural ice production and use, through the development of industrial refrigeration technology, to its impact on private life and international logistics.
A milestone in this history was the founding of “Linde’s Eismaschinen Aktiengesellschaft” in Wiesbaden on June 21, 1879. Carl von Linde (1842–1934), a pioneer of refrigeration technology and professor of mechanical engineering in Munich, thus took the decisive step toward the industrial application of his innovation.
