The Künstler winery has been in the family since 1648. Until the end of the Second World War, the family ran their winery 80 kilometers north of Vienna in the municipality of Untertannowitz, South Moravia, now the Czech Republic. After expropriation and expulsion from his centuries-old homeland, Franz Künstler re-founded the winery in Hochheim Main/Rheingau in 1965. Due to his strict quality philosophy, he immediately achieved many successes at numerous tastings and awards. Since 1992, the winery has belonged to his son Gunter, who continues his father's philosophy with his wife Monika and his young, highly committed team. They have been members of the Association of German Prädikat and Quality Wine Estates (VDP) since 1994.
