Mayor Christiane Hinninger: “Especially in Frauenstein, where public play areas and open spaces are limited, this playground is once again an important gathering place for children, teens, and families. Above all, however, it is inclusive. Many pieces of play equipment allow children with different abilities to play together. This sets an example for other playgrounds as well.”

The redesign had become necessary because numerous old pieces of playground equipment were no longer usable for safety reasons. Children, teens, and parents were involved in the planning process. It became clear that inclusive and versatile play options were particularly desired. These suggestions were incorporated.

The new features include a carousel that is wheelchair-accessible, a double swing, an inclusive sand play deck, and a combination play structure with two slides, one of which is specially designed for children with disabilities. A communication board with symbols offers children with limited speech abilities additional ways to communicate and encourages them to play together.

The design of the play areas was also optimized for the most accessible use possible. Fall-protection tiles that are easy to walk and roll on, as well as fall-protection material suitable for wheelchairs, make it easier to use the facility.

The previously rather flat terrain has been transformed into a small hilly landscape. The sculpted play hills divide the playground into separate areas and invite children to run, romp, climb, and play hide-and-seek without compromising the site’s overall clarity. The existing tree population has been largely preserved and will provide valuable shade in the future. Sealed surfaces have been converted into new play and green spaces. This allows rainwater to infiltrate more effectively and improves the microclimate of the area.

The playground is complemented by new benches, tables, bicycle racks, trash cans, and paved gathering areas. The play areas are embedded in a green space covering approximately 2,000 square meters and offer ideal conditions for spending time, being active, and socializing outdoors. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately 400,000 euros. The project was funded from the budget of the Parks and Recreation Department of the state capital of Wiesbaden.
