Unmarried adults who are not related to one another may register their marriage at the registry office or at local government offices. The registration must be filed at the primary or secondary residence of one of the two individuals. Marriage registration may take place no earlier than six months before the wedding ceremony.

At the Altes Rathaus Registry Office, marriage registration is done online (opens in a new tab). Documents and supporting evidence must be uploaded via the “Digital Mailbox (opens in a new tab).”

You begin the marriage registration process by entering your personal information. Your identities are verified using the eID function or, alternatively, through a video identification procedure. You can then digitally sign the marriage registration. There is a fee for registering the marriage, which can be paid quickly and easily online via PayPal or direct debit.

You will then receive information about the required documents and supporting evidence as soon as possible.

If you need to submit original documents and proof or attend an in-person appointment, you will be informed of the next steps via email.

Once the review is complete, you will receive all the information regarding your wedding ceremony. The registration is valid for six months after the legal review is completed. Upon request, the documents will be sent to the marriage registry office.

You may designate up to two witnesses.

A declaration regarding the use of surnames may be submitted.

After the wedding ceremony, a marriage certificate will be issued upon request.
