Worth noting

The twinning association Nueva Nicaragua e.V. has been supporting projects in Ocotal with donations for many years and each year supervises young people during their voluntary service.

Initiatives by the association have resulted in numerous projects, such as the children’s library “Las Abejitas“, the children’s circus Ocolmena, and a Montessori daycare. The association also supports the women’s shelter “Casa Entre Nosotras“, where women threatened by violence can find protection and psycho-social and spiritual support.

The association also distributed donations to other institutions like the education centre, Radio Segovia, or the senior citizens’ centre San Antonio. Ocotal´s Hospital receives medical support in a number of areas from Wiesbaden’s Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinics.

Since 2003, two young Wiesbaden residents per year have spent several months in Ocotal to perform their “Other Service Abroad”, or a Volunteer Service. Their efforts are usually concentrated on the children’s library or the children’s circus. All of these measures are conducted in close cooperation with twinning association Nueva Nicaragua e.V. Over the years, many young people from Ocotal have also come to the state capital to further their educations through internships. The knowledge they gain in Wiesbaden will enable them to run their own projects when they return to their Nicaraguan home.
