“Shop Local”: Shopping Locally to Support a Vibrant Downtown
The “Shop Local – Discover Wiesbaden” promotional days kicked off on Thursday, September 10. On Friday, September 11, Daniela Georgi, Head of the Economic Affairs Department, and Sabine Meder, CEO of the Wiesbaden Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), took a tour of shops and restaurants in the city center.
During the “heimat shoppen” event days, retailers and restaurants in downtown Wiesbaden are inviting visitors through and including Saturday, September 12, to rediscover the city with special promotions and a prize-drawing scavenger hunt. In conversations with retailers and restaurant owners, Georgi and Meder learned about the businesses’ involvement in “heimat shoppen” and discussed current developments and challenges facing downtown retail and the restaurant industry.
“These promotional days encourage people to visit local stores and consciously experience the diversity of Wiesbaden’s downtown. They highlight just how much quality can be found right on our doorstep and underscore the importance of retail and dining for a vibrant city center,” said Georgi during the tour. “Shopping locally not only supports individual businesses but also strengthens the heart of our city as an attractive place to shop and live,” said Georgi, explaining the background of the campaign days.
“Local retail and restaurants are important components of urban society,” said Meder. “Smaller, owner-operated stores in particular stand out for their unique offerings and personalized service. They serve as gathering places and thrive on the dedication of the people behind them. ‘heimat shoppen’ invites people to discover or rediscover what the local area has to offer and, in doing so, strengthen Wiesbaden as a business hub.”
During the “heimat shoppen – Discover Wiesbaden” promotional days, more than 60 shops and restaurants will invite visitors to enjoy a special shopping experience in the city center with a wide variety of offers. At the same time, they’ll showcase how they contribute to an attractive urban lifestyle and shape the city’s atmosphere.
A highlight is the late-night shopping event on Friday, September 11. Selected stores will be open until 10 p.m. and will offer special promotions as well as a relaxed shopping experience well into the evening. There’s also a special parking offer on this day: From 3 p.m. to midnight, parking costs just two euros per session in the Galeria and Luisenforum parking garages, as well as in the municipal Lilienparken garages at City, Luisenplatz, Mauritiusgalerie, and Theater.
Together, the businesses are also inviting shoppers to participate in the “heimat shoppen” rally with a prize drawing: Anyone who visits at least six participating stores and restaurants can enter a drawing for more than 160 prizes worth over 4,500 euros. The winners will be notified and can pick up their prizes at the participating business that donated them.
“heimat shoppen” is a nationwide campaign organized by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). The promotional days in downtown Wiesbaden are being organized jointly by local businesses, the Wiesbaden Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Wiesbaden), and Citymanagement Wiesbaden.
