Identity card
Current Notice
: As of May 1, 2025, photographs for passports and ID cards will be taken exclusively in digital form. For more information, click here (opens in a new tab).
Germans who have reached the age of 16 are required to have an identity card. This does not apply if you hold a valid German passport.
To apply for an identity card, you must be registered as having your primary residence in Wiesbaden. If you are not registered with Wiesbaden as your primary residence, you must provide compelling reasons why the application must be submitted in Wiesbaden.
Applications for an identity card for individuals under 16 years of age must generally be submitted by both legal guardians. The place of residence of the legal guardians is irrelevant in this context. If a legal guardian is unable to appear in person, a written declaration of consentPDF-File86,73 kB must be submitted. The original document is not required, but a copy of the guardian’s ID must be provided. The ID card can only be issued to the legal guardian who submitted the application (alone) if the written consent of the absent legal guardian is submitted at the time of pickup. The child must also be present when the application is submitted.
To apply for a replacement ID card early (before the current one expires), you must demonstrate a legitimate interest in obtaining a new one.
We recommend applying for a new ID card about two months before the current one expires.
The German ID card also serves as an online ID (opens in a new tab).
You have the option to pick up your new ID card around the clock via the WI-Box (opens in a new tab). Please feel free to contact us when applying.
We are happy to assist you in person, but we operate exclusively by appointment. You can quickly and easily book an appointment online via the calendar on the Citizens’ Office or local administration websites.
