Survey "Civic engagement and civic participation in Wiesbaden" 2019
In January and February 2019, 1,509 Wiesbaden residents aged 16 and over were surveyed by telephone about civic engagement and civic participation.
Volunteers provided information about the areas in which they are involved as well as the general conditions, time commitment and wishes regarding their volunteering.
Those who were not involved in volunteering were asked about the reasons for this or for giving up volunteering. The survey also covered general interest in volunteering and awareness of information and contact opportunities.
Currently, 26 percent of Wiesbaden residents are involved in voluntary work - 2009: 36 percent, 2014: 34 percent, 2016: 27 percent. Declines in the volunteering rate are particularly noticeable in the 30 to 39 age group. In addition to having lived in Wiesbaden for a long time and belonging to an association, having children in the household also increases the likelihood of volunteering. In a comparison over time, an increased proportion of people who were once active volunteers no longer wish to get involved. Time restrictions, work commitments and family obligations are the main reasons for this.
In the second part of the survey, respondents were asked to assess the opportunities for civic participation in Wiesbaden and the progress made in their implementation. In addition to awareness of contact points and access options for civic engagement, desired topics for participation and forms of participation were also recorded.
The fact that "citizens can participate in the city's plans and projects" was considered "very important" or "important" to an even greater extent in 2019 than in 2016. The importance of personal participation opportunities was also rated higher than in 2016. 579 respondents (38%) stated that they had taken part in a specific project or event for citizen participation in the last two years.
