Worth noting

A certified Communal European City Friendship has existed between Wiesbaden’s district Biebrich and the Canton capital Glarus since 1990.

Since then, the relationship, which started back in the 1960s, has been fostered by mutual visits.

The official twinning emerged on January 11th, 2009 from the city friendship proclaimed as part of Biebrich’s New Year’s reception in 1990. Both charters testify to the cities’ intentions to strengthen the friendly relationships, to foster encounters between people of both communities, and thus contribute to the understanding between the two nations and of democracy in peace and freedom.

The twinning association Wiesbaden-Biebrich – Glarus e.V. was founded on September 7th, 2012. It primarily supports Biebrich’s associations in making contact with like-minded groups in Glarus and helps to intensify the exchange between citizens of both communities. Citizens and delegations from each town travel to the respective twin town on many occasions to express mutual friendship and appreciation or to support their partners by participating in events.

These regular encounters and activities include, for instance, a children’s holiday camp in Glarus, the participation of guest from Glarus in the New Year’s Reception and “Mosburgfest” in Biebrich, exchanges and concerts of musical groups and choirs, mutual visits at “Fastnacht” (carnival) and other celebrations, and since 2013 an annual Glarus Day in Biebrich.
