June environmental tip: Take good care of the climate - and yourself
The consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly noticeable and can also be emotionally stressful. Many people feel insecure, sad, exhausted or powerless. However, small changes in everyday life can help to reduce stress and boost confidence.
Heat waves, heavy rains, and wildfires are making it increasingly clear that the climate crisis is already upon us. The consequences are becoming more and more physically noticeable and can take an emotional toll. Many people feel anxious, sad, exhausted, or powerless. Moreover, they worry not only about their own future but also about that of their children, grandchildren, and future generations. Concern about the environment and climate change is also high in Wiesbaden: In the “Life in Wiesbaden 2022” survey, 81 percent of residents expressed concern about climate change.
The good news is that if you talk about your feelings and make small changes in your daily life, you’ll be better able to cope with stress and gain new confidence.
This is how we strengthen confidence in difficult times:
Talking About Feelings on Climate Change: Concerns about climate change weigh heavily on many people. Talking with friends or family can provide relief and open up new perspectives. Starting in June, there will be a new initiative in Wiesbaden: At the Klimacafé Wiesbaden, people can openly discuss their feelings about climate change. This safe, moderated space for discussion can provide relief and reinforce the sense that you’re not alone in your concerns.
Consume news in moderation: Constant crisis reports can be stressful. Stay informed selectively and consciously take breaks from the news or social media. This helps clear your head and reduce stress. It’s also important to seek out information that focuses on solutions and positive developments. This can be encouraging and give you new strength.
Recharge in nature: A walk in nature or taking conscious, deep breaths can help you distance yourself from stressful thoughts and recharge your energy. A study shows that just six minutes of birdsong a day can have a positive effect on anxiety and depression.
Take action yourself: When you do something for the climate and the environment, you feel less helpless and realize that your own actions can make a difference. This could be a Repair Café, community gardening, saving energy, or choosing to bike instead of driving. Small steps make a difference.
Don’t strive for perfection: No one can solve the climate crisis alone. That’s why it’s important to realistically assess your own capabilities and not take on too much.
Join forces with others: Taking action together can provide relief and encourage you. When you get involved with others, you often realize: I’m not alone in my concerns. Neighborhood projects, clubs, or local initiatives strengthen a sense of community and show that change is possible.
Taking good care of yourself is especially important during stressful times. When you look after your own mental health, you remain capable of taking action, find it easier to regain confidence, and feel more connected to others.
