Viticulture in Schierstein

Schierstein is a popular excursion destination thanks to its Mediterranean flair and harbor. Viticulture, first mentioned in a document in 973, is also very important in this wine suburb. A variety of different white wines - Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Silvaner - and red wines - Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Saint Laurent and Merlot - are grown here on 39.2 hectares of vineyards. The wines from the Schiersteiner Hölle can be tasted at the wine stand on Hans-Römer-Platz at weekends from April to October.

Site name, soil structure and wine characters

Schierstein hell

The name of the site is derived from the term "Halde". The soils are medium to deep loess over Pliocene and Pleistocene gravels and sands, in some cases also alluvial soils. The wines show a mineral acid texture and a vegetative aroma. They are closed and only develop their finesse after a certain maturation phase.
