Press release of the state capital Wiesbaden

Positive Interim Assessment of the Corridor Renovation on the Right Bank of the Rhine

The state capital of Wiesbaden has issued a positive interim assessment following the first few weeks of the corridor renovation on the right bank of the Rhine. The rail replacement bus service has been operating reliably so far, the capacity provided is sufficient, and the number of complaints received by the city is low. The state capital particularly commends DB InfraGO for its professional preparation, communication, and implementation.

As part of the corridor renovation, DB InfraGO is carrying out a comprehensive modernization of the approximately 160-kilometer-long Right Bank Rhine Line between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden. During the full closure, which will last several months, numerous projects will be carried out simultaneously. These include, among other things, the replacement of tracks, switches, overhead lines, and bridges, as well as the modernization of train stations. In doing so, DB InfraGO is laying the foundation for a more robust and reliable rail infrastructure in the long term on this route—which is vital for the city of Wiesbaden—serving the two stations Schierstein and Biebrich.

A project of this magnitude presents a challenging task for DB InfraGO, the participating municipalities and transit agencies, and, not least, the passengers. Regional train service is being replaced by buses; numerous construction sites have been set up along the entire corridor; and railroad crossings must be temporarily closed to facilitate construction logistics. However, observations by the city administration to date show that the extensive preparations are paying off and that DB InfraGO is successfully meeting the high demands placed on rail replacement service, communication, and coordination.

The initial assessment of the rail replacement service in the city of Wiesbaden is accordingly encouraging. The buses in service offer sufficient capacity and have so far been largely reliable and on time. The low number of complaints received by the state capital of Wiesbaden also suggests that the replacement plan is working well overall. No major capacity bottlenecks or operational problems have been identified so far.

“A full closure of this magnitude is a major challenge for everyone involved. This makes it all the more remarkable how reliably the rail replacement service has been operating so far. DB InfraGO’s comprehensive preparations are paying off, and the measure is being implemented with a high degree of professionalism,” explains Andreas Kowol, Head of Transportation.

Passengers and the affected municipalities are being kept informed about the current status, rail replacement service, altered travel routes, and possible alternatives through timely and comprehensive communication across multiple channels.

These temporary restrictions are offset by an investment in the future of the right bank of the Rhine line. Approximately 1.6 billion euros are being invested in the comprehensive renovation of the line. Tracks, switches, overhead lines, bridges, and stations are being modernized to make the line more reliable and less prone to disruptions in the future. The goal is to reduce service outages and delays and to improve the quality of service for passengers and freight traffic for many years to come.

On the route between Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, passengers are already benefiting from the positive side effects of the closure. Service is significantly more stable because delays and disruptions from the closed section of the line are currently not affecting the remaining portion of the RB10 regional rail line. At the same time, seating capacity has been significantly increased here, as additional trains are available due to the closure. This makes the service not only more reliable but also capable of handling greater passenger volumes.

“The corridor renovation is placing considerable demands on passengers, road users, and residents. This makes it all the more deserving of recognition how professionally DB InfraGO is managing the impacts. The reliable replacement service, effective communication, and the prospect of a more stable line in the long term add up to a clearly positive interim assessment. We also hope that the positive effects on the RB 10 will continue even after the corridor renovation is complete,” said Andreas Kowol, Head of Transportation.
