Inclusive cultural offerings - Comprehensible language
By using simple or easy language, people who have difficulties with the German language can participate in appropriate cultural offerings.
Comprehensible language is playing an increasingly important role in the arts and culture sector in order to facilitate access to art and culture for as many people as possible.
There are differences between the following two forms of language:
Simple language: A simplified, easy-to-understand version of standard language. It dispenses with complicated sentence structures and technical terms or explains them.
Easy language: Even more simplified, with short sentences, simple grammar and additional explanations. Often supplemented by pictures and symbols. It is aimed at people with learning difficulties or little knowledge of German.
Used in art and culture: Museums & Exhibitions: Our museums strive to provide descriptions of works of art and explanations in understandable language. Literature & media: There are numerous books in simple and easy language available for loan in the district libraries. Guided tours: Offers for people with cognitive impairments or for anyone who would like an accessible explanation.
Comprehensible language enables inclusive cultural education and ensures that more people can participate in cultural life.

Mauritius media library
Borrowing from the Mauritius media library
Reading is fun, touching, takes you away and shows you new worlds... People who cannot read well, for whom books are too thick, the font too small, the language too difficult, should also be taught the joy of reading. This is possible with books in "simple language", which are written with short sentences and few foreign words. Books in simple language can be borrowed from the Mauritius Mediathek, including those published by "Spaß am Lesen Verlag".
Inclusive reading aloud in the Mauritius media library
Every last Friday of the month, a small group of people read aloud in simple language. People with cognitive impairments, people who do not yet speak German well and generally anyone who would like to be read to are invited. The volunteer reader reads humorous, thought-provoking or well-known stories such as fairy tales. If required, the event can also be held in sign language. Participation is free of charge. Date: Every last Friday of the month, 4.30 to 5.30 pm. Registration and suggestions at kulturelle-teilhabewiesbadende or by telephone on 0611 31 3771.
