What are the goals?
What is to be achieved?
In order to remedy the current weaknesses and make the most of local opportunities, new goals are needed that are fit for the future. The area, which is predominantly used for retail, is therefore being transformed into an urban quarter in which everyone enjoys living.
Bahnhofs.Quartier Biebrich is a district for living and working. It has a high proportion of green public spaces. There are various uses here that cater to people's needs. The spaces used for living and for the community are designed in such a way that they can be used by everyone. Public spaces are green and fit for the climate. There are few cars in the new quarter. The Wiesbaden-Biebrich regional train station and buses are easy to use. This creates a sustainable and vibrant urban space for everyone.
The state capital is also pursuing the goal of
- To develop a livable and vibrant urban district in which the rules of sustainable urban development are implemented throughout the entire district.
- To consider the issues of climate, pollution control, environmental protection and nature conservation in the planning from the outset.
To significantly increase the proportion of green spaces in the district. - To develop a central green space that fulfills important functions for the climate in the city. It should be designed to be attractive and accessible to different people.
- To develop a neighborhood that recovers quickly from heavy rainfall, storms and heat. To this end, the district is to be developed into a sponge city.
- To supplement the surroundings of the new quarter (Gibb, Parkfeld, Rosenfeld) with uses that meet the needs and wishes of local people.
- At least 40 percent of the new apartments to be socially subsidized.
- Develop buildings and public spaces, services, social and cultural offerings and other uses in Design for All in such a way that they can be used by everyone in the neighborhood.
- To develop a neighborhood that is supplied with energy from renewable resources.
- To develop the Wiesbaden-Biebrich regional train station into a mobility hub that can be used by everyone. Switching between car, bus, train and bicycle is easy.
- To develop a neighborhood where there are few cars. Public spaces are safe and easy to find your way around. People like to get around on foot or by bike. There are many opportunities to share cars and cargo bikes with the neighborhood. The surrounding area is also easily accessible.
- Developing a neighborhood that is less affected by cars and noise. Many different measures are being implemented to achieve this. One measure is the continuation of Hagenauer Straße/Erich-Ollenhauer-Straße from the 2030 traffic development plan. A conversion of Äppelallee at Schlosspark is also to be investigated.(Click here for the 2030 traffic development plan (opens in a new tab)).
- Develop Seligmann-Baer-Platz (station forecourt) into a place for everyone. This is where people arrive in the district and enjoy spending time.
- Implement small projects on site to make the positive changes tangible at an early stage until the Biebrich station quarter is built.
What are the rules of sustainable urban development in the Biebrich station quarter?
Bahnhofs.Quartier Biebrich is one of four experimental spaces for sustainable urban development (opens in a new tab). They were approved by the Wiesbaden City Council in 2021. The rules of sustainable urban development are being implemented in them. The Urban Planning Office and the Environmental Office have thus defined new guidelines for sustainable urban development. They apply to all structural and spatial development measures. In the Biebrich station district, the key topics of Living City and New Mobility are particularly important
The Living City thematic area relates to the development of urban building density. This involves the design and height of buildings. They are developed in an appropriate relationship to the existing and future green and open spaces. Throughout the district, there are uses on the first floor that meet the needs and wishes of local people. This enlivens the public space. There are also different uses within the individual buildings. The floor plans allow different forms of living, working and meeting. Private and public spaces can be used flexibly and are barrier-free. This contributes to social revitalization. As a result, new neighborhoods become an attractive living space for everyone.
The New Mobility topic area defines measures for sustainable mobility. New neighborhoods can do without cars. People who walk or cycle are given more space in the city. For people who are dependent on cars, there are central parking garages and many offers to share cars or bicycles with the neighborhood. Bus and train stops are easy to reach and can be used without barriers.
What is a 15-minute district?
In a 15-minute district, all everyday trips can be made in less than 15 minutes. You don't need a car. You can get to work, the supermarket, the doctor and the nursery by bus, train, on foot or by bike. This requires less space and removes barriers. The noise generated by cars is also reduced. The quality of the air improves. This is good for everyone in the neighborhood.
What is an inclusive district?
Bahnhofs.Quartier Biebrich is an attractive and liveable place to live and work for everyone. With a design for all, the quarter will be a model for inclusive urban development in Wiesbaden. Public and private spaces are barrier-free and can be used flexibly. Everyone feels safe and can easily find their way around the district. All everyday amenities are within easy reach. Many people can participate in the planning of the neighborhood. Interested citizens can contribute their ideas and wishes. The result is a lively, diverse and mixed-use, inclusive residential district with short distances.
