This commitment marks another important step toward the resumption of regular service on the Aartalbahn line, a process that was initiated in 2020 by the Wiesbaden Department of Transportation with its request for an initial feasibility study. Although responsibility for regional rail infrastructure projects lies with the State of Hesse and the Rhine-Main Transport Association, the Wiesbaden Department of Transportation has closely monitored the entire process to date and, in light of recent reports, has once again received numerous inquiries regarding the next steps. 

After the feasibility study, completed in 2023, indicated that the project was fundamentally eligible for funding based on a positive benefit-cost ratio of 2.1, discussions began—in parallel with the financing issues that have now been clarified for the time being—between the State Minister of Transportation and Deutsche Bahn, as the current owner, regarding the sale of the rail line. On this issue as well, the Department of Transportation has been informed by the State Ministry that Deutsche Bahn is, in principle, willing to sell the section of track necessary for the reactivation and that concrete sales negotiations are currently underway. As previously reported, the Hessische Landesbahn will then take over the renovation of the line and its operation. 

“After this lengthy wait for a decision on the line’s ownership, we are now optimistic that we will soon be able to take the next steps together with Hessische Landesbahn,” says Transportation Director Andreas Kowol. 

The Wiesbaden Department of Transportation will continue to monitor the process very closely, not least with a view to establishing new stops along the route. “In addition to the Dotzheim station, I consider it particularly important for the reactivation of the Aartalbahn to include new stops in Klarenthal and on Schiersteiner Straße. “A new stop on Schiersteiner Straße, in particular, will enable connections to a wide range of important destinations, both in Wiesbaden and toward the Rheingau and Mainz,” explains Kowol.  

More generally, Wiesbaden has a strong interest in reactivating the line as quickly as possible, as the new connection will relieve traffic on heavily congested roads and bus routes, improve access to jobs and educational opportunities, and strengthen transportation links to Bad Schwalbach and Taunusstein. At the same time, it helps reduce through traffic through the city and improves access to commercial areas in Biebrich and throughout the Rhine-Main region. 

At the Wiesbaden-Ost terminus, a direct connection to the S-Bahn lines toward Mainz, Frankfurt, and Wiesbaden Central Station is planned. The travel time between Bad Schwalbach and Wiesbaden-Ost is expected to be about 30 minutes, offering a significant time savings compared to traveling by car. 

A key factor in the project’s current status is the long-standing commitment of the Nassauische Touristik-Bahn e.V. and numerous volunteers who have maintained the track within the city limits with the city’s support. Aartalbahn Infrastruktur gGmbH, as the infrastructure operator, is also carrying out important maintenance work on bridges and other structures along the Wiesbaden section on behalf of the city. Kowol says: “My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who, with so much time and passion, ensured that the Aartalbahn in Wiesbaden was preserved in the first place. Without this dedication, we wouldn’t be able to talk about a return to daily rail service today.” 

“Now it is crucial that the state of Hesse makes the necessary decisions and consistently moves the planning process forward. We are ready to provide active support at any time and expect the process to move forward swiftly,” Kowol concludes.
