Department IV - Department for Integration and Law, Health and Animal Welfare

Veterinary and Consumer Protection Office

Food Inspection and Food Hygiene:

Our food inspectors ensure compliance with food safety regulations at approximately 3,000 establishments, as well as at events and markets. We also handle consumer complaints related to food.

Animal welfare, animal health, and disease control:

We are responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations at agricultural operations and all private animal husbandry facilities within the LHW, compliance with animal disease control laws, processing applications for permits under § 11 of the Animal Welfare Act (TierSchG) and the Animal Welfare Transport Ordinance, and the monitoring of veterinary drugs.
We accept reports of violations of animal welfare or animal disease control laws.

Slaughter and meat hygiene:

As part of food safety inspections, we conduct examinations during slaughter operations and in the processing of game meat.
If we identify violations through our work, we pursue them through administrative or criminal proceedings. Significant violations identified during food safety inspections are published in the Consumer Bulletin.
