You are obliged to register with the Citizens' Office or a local authority within two weeks of moving in.
Late registrations can be punished with a fine.

Please bring with you:

• Identity documents of all persons being registered
  • If more than one identity document is required, all documents must be submitted in full.
• If applicable: eID card or electronic residence permit

The following data or documents are also required from

• persons moving from abroad: the last residential address in Germany (registration confirmation, date of moving in and out)
• Persons in care: Caregiver's identity card

The Citizens' Registration Office or the local administration may request the submission of further documents as proof of the information provided (e.g. marriage certificate, court order).

Free of charge.

Individuals aged 16 and older are responsible for fulfilling their registration requirements on their own; therefore, they must appear in person or be represented by a proxy.

If you own multiple residences in Germany, one of these residences is your primary residence.
Your primary residence is

• if you are married or in a civil partnership: the residence primarily used by the family or the civil partnership. This also applies if you are living apart from your family or civil partner only temporarily.
• if you are married or in a civil partnership and live permanently apart: the residence you use most frequently.
• if you are a minor: the residence primarily used by your parents or foster parents. If they live separately, the primary residence is the residence where you primarily live.
• Only if the primary residence cannot be determined beyond a doubt should the focus be on the center of your life. Indicators for this include, for example, the type of residence, personal ties, social and local political activities, as well as membership in clubs and other organizations.

A personal interview is always required.
