Classroom support is an integral part of school social work for children. Once a week, a school social worker joins the homeroom teacher in the classroom. During these regular class sessions, social issues are addressed that affect children in their everyday school life, personal development, and interactions with others.

Key topics include violence and bullying prevention, conflict resolution and mediation, media literacy, emotions and needs, children’s rights, self-confidence and courage, as well as cooperation and class community. Current issues and conflicts within the class can also be addressed and worked through together. The class council can also be an integral part of class support.

The content is presented in a way that is age-appropriate and varied. Depending on the topic, the program may include discussion groups, cooperation exercises, games, role-playing, creative methods, various media, or multi-part projects. Children are given the opportunity to share their own experiences and ideas, learn about different perspectives, and develop solutions together.

Regular work with the entire class serves an important preventive purpose. Social skills are strengthened early on, conflicts can be addressed before they become entrenched, and the children learn strategies for interacting with one another in a respectful and constructive manner.

At the same time, class support helps build a trusting relationship between the children and the school social worker. Students come to see the school social worker as a reliable point of contact and know who to turn to with questions, concerns, or problems.

The goal is to support children in their social and personal development and to work with them to foster a respectful, safe, and supportive classroom environment.
